MATH TEAM STORY 3

AS TOLD BY DAVID NINOMIYA

There were a couple of guys in the math team that liked to gamble.  Ok, well I'm kind of the one who started doing it.  I bet Nelson and my other friend Justin on the stupidest things, rank the whole Kalani team in terms of points, would our team's final score be odd or even, Kaiser's ranking vs. Kalani ranking, Allyson's score vs. Melissa's score + 5 points, etc.

I think it spilled over to my teammates.  I found out Justin and Scott made a bet about the WinterBall.  The details of the bet were in conflict, and I think still are to this day, many years later.  Just a side note about Justin, he once posed an interesting question to me about the math team competitions.  “Why would anyone in their right mind want to wake up at 8'oclock on a Saturday morning to do math for fun?”

At one of our practice sessions, Justin, Nelson, Jason, Scott, Melissa, Allyson, Ms. Nagata and I were at Ms. Nagata's room studying.  Well, at least we were supposed to be, I think we were just talking story as usual.  Anyway, the bet had something to do with Justin asking Melissa out to the WinterBall.  Melissa announces she has to leave for the day, so starts to walk out the door.  I sort of nudge Justin and point out that she's leaving, so . . . like do something man.

In front of everyone, Justin asks Melissa out to the WinterBall.  Now keep in mind the whole team is watching these two.  Imagine the pressure.  There was silence and a stunned look on Melissa's face for a second or two.  Anyway, Melissa, with her classic smirk, says yes, and Justin walks her out the door.  It was quite an adorable sight to the half dozen of us still in the room.

Unfortunately, one of them forgot to turn in their permission form, so they end up not going to the WinterBall.  =(  I forget who's fault that was.  I think they just went out on a regular date instead.  Here's where the bet comes in.  Justin claims the $20 bet was that she would say yes.  Scott claims the bet was whether they would actually go to the WinterBall.  I don't think either of them paid up, so much for the bet.  Anyway, that's the story of how Justin asked out Melissa.
